The Northeast region is set to face yet another powerful storm this week, as heavy rain, strong winds, and snow are forecasted to hit the area starting Saturday afternoon. The system is anticipated to move in from the Ohio Valley, with rain intensifying from west to east and reaching eastern New England by Saturday night.
Amidst the anticipation, many outdoor plans are being rearranged, as the storm's arrival was expected. According to FOX Weather Meteorologist Kendall Smith, this seems to be the case for numerous individuals in the region today.
Unlike the previous two storms, cold air is in place across northern New England. Consequently, snowfall is expected to begin when the event commences and persist throughout Sunday, according to the FOX Forecast Center. The higher elevations of northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and northern Maine may accumulate as much as 6-plus inches of snow.
Winter Storm Watches and Warnings have been issued for communities south and east of the Great Lakes due to the threat of heavy snowfall and gusty winds. Accumulations in the warned areas may reach between 6 to 16 inches of heavy, wet snow, depending on location and elevation. The FOX Forecast Center believes this storm could bring northern Maine its largest snowfall of the season thus far.
In terms of precipitation for the southern areas, the FOX Forecast Center predicts yet another round of rain in a week filled with it. At the culmination of this system, some parts of the Northeast may have endured over 8 inches of rain from all three events combined.
Coastal areas in New England can expect strong south-southeasterly winds, potentially causing significant coastal flooding during high tide on Saturday night and Sunday morning. The combination of the storm and the New Moon on Sunday is expected to raise astronomical tides even further. Coastal flood alerts are currently in effect along the Northeast coastline, spanning from Down East Maine to the Delmarva region.
As the storm progresses and moves away by Sunday night and Monday, strong northerly winds will drag cold air from Canada, resulting in gusts exceeding 40 mph. This can potentially lead to downed trees and scattered power outages. Additionally, the rain-snow line will gradually shift south, with cities such as Hartford, Providence, and Boston potentially experiencing snowfall before the storm dissipates.
However, the impact of the storm does not end there. The FOX Forecast Center warns of widespread lake-effect and lake-enhanced snow on Monday as cold air continues to pour in behind the low-pressure system.
As residents and authorities prepare for yet another storm, it is paramount to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and heed any warnings or advisories issued by local authorities. Stay safe and be prepared for the inclement weather conditions ahead.
