Leaders of the centrist group No Labels have made the decision to proceed with selecting candidates for a third-party ticket that aims to challenge both President Biden and former President Donald Trump in the upcoming November elections. This announcement comes after a Zoom call with hundreds of supporters on Friday, where there was no discussion of specific potential candidates.

No Labels leaders have stated that they will unveil the selection process for presidential candidates on March 14. They are considering holding a virtual convention as early as April, with a notice period as short as 48 hours. It was emphasized that the group will not settle for just anyone and that finding suitable candidates will require courage.

The decision to move forward with a third-party ticket marks a setback for Biden allies, who have been actively working to discourage the group and any potential candidates, fearing that it could benefit Trump in the polls. On the Zoom call, which included 832 delegates from all 50 states, a vote was taken electronically to determine if No Labels should continue discussions with potential candidates for the unity presidential ticket. While the result was not unanimous, it was only one vote short of a unanimous "yes."

Preselected speakers from different regions spoke during the call, indicating unanimous or near-unanimous support for pursuing the nomination from their respective No Labels supporters. Some delegates expressed the need for a political home for former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley voters and common-sense voters. It was highlighted that supporters trust No Labels to withdraw from the race if polling suggests that their effort would "be a spoiler."

Notable political figures, including Senator Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) and former Maryland governor Larry Hogan (R), have recently announced that they will not be joining the No Labels effort. However, former New Jersey governor Chris Christie (R) has left open the possibility of heading a No Labels ticket, despite previously dismissing the endeavor as a "fool's errand." Haley, who has not endorsed Trump, has repeatedly ruled out participating in a third-party bid.

No Labels has been grappling with the challenge of finding a candidate and devising a public selection process, as well as navigating the unique structure of their presidential effort. The group's ballot access is managed by a nonprofit based in D.C. that does not disclose its donors, and while they control various state operations, they are prohibited from funding a presidential candidate without one. Another independent group, New Leaders '24 PAC, has been established to raise funds to support the eventual nominees.

Despite opposition from both Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans, No Labels organizers have reiterated their commitment to not running a candidate or withdrawing their candidate if it becomes clear that they cannot win outright and would only assist in electing Trump. However, polling of unnamed "moderate independent candidates" has yet to point towards a clear path to winning the electoral college in a hypothetical matchup against Trump and Biden.

As No Labels prepares for their selection process, the 2024 election continues to unfold, with a rematch between Trump and Biden appearing increasingly likely following the departure of Dean Phillips and Nikki Haley from the presidential race. The Republican delegate count and key issues remain pivotal as the campaign progresses, and voters across all states and U.S. territories will soon determine their party's nominee for president.
