In a move to streamline operations and capitalize on growth opportunities, sportswear giant Nike has announced the layoff of 740 workers at its headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. This decision marks the second wave of layoffs following a previous round earlier this year.
The company officially reported the layoffs to the state's Office of Workforce Investments on Friday, confirming that the affected employees are solely based at Nike's Beaverton campus. Notably, the workforce reduction does not extend to retail stores or manufacturing facilities.
Nike's CEO, John Donahoe, had previously announced in February that the company would reduce its total workforce by 2%, but did not disclose specific details at the time. The recent layoffs in Oregon represent a significant portion of this workforce reduction.
In a statement provided to KPTV, Nike expressed its intention to optimize operations to seize the growing interest in sport, health, and wellness. The company highlighted its commitment to leveraging its strongest assets and focusing on continued growth. They also expressed gratitude for the contributions made by all Nike employees.
As one of the largest employers in the Pacific Northwest, Nike currently employs over 15,500 people in Oregon and Southwest Washington, with a global workforce exceeding 83,000 employees.
The ongoing restructuring efforts by Nike reflect its strategic approach to adapt to market demands and position itself for future success. The company's commitment to growth and innovation remains unwavering, even as it undergoes workforce adjustments to align with its business objectives.
