In an exhilarating second semifinal of the NCAA Frozen Four, two New York Rangers prospects showcased their skills on Thursday night as they helped their collegiate team, the Boston College Eagles, secure a spot in the National Championship. The Eagles dominated the Michigan Wolverines, shutting them out with a resounding 4-0 victory at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Leading the charge for Boston College was Gabe Perreault, the Rangers' first-round pick in the 2023 draft. Perreault delivered an exceptional performance, guiding the Eagles' offense with three points consisting of one goal and two assists. He played a critical role in opening the scoring just 1:20 into the game, passing the puck to Ryan Leonard, who found Will Smith for a quick shot that found its way into the back of the net.
Not to be outdone, defenseman Drew Fortescue, selected by the Rangers in the third round of the 2023 draft, exhibited solid defensive play throughout the match. He contributed with a blocked shot and accumulated two penalty minutes, playing his part in securing the shutout victory for the Eagles.
Head coach Greg Brown praised his team's performance, especially their ability to stay composed in the latter stages of the game. In the third period, with the lead in hand, the Eagles simplified their game, employing a safer approach and utilizing the walls effectively. Their tactics allowed them to keep pucks away from the center and prevented the Wolverines from mounting a comeback.
With the win, Boston College's freshman trio, comprising Perreault and two USNTDP alums, extended their remarkable season. It marked the 21st time this year that one of the three freshmen found the net, while the other two provided the assists.
The Eagles further solidified their advantage in the second period by scoring two goals within 49 seconds during a 4-on-4 play. Will Smith notched his second goal of the game after his shot from behind the net took a fortuitous bounce off a Michigan defender. Perreault provided the primary assist on the play, demonstrating his ability to create chaos in front of the net. Shortly after, Cutter Gauthier capitalized on a turnover, controlling the loose puck and skillfully finding the back of the net to widen Boston College's lead to 3-0.
Perreault capped off his impressive performance by scoring an unassisted goal just 5:03 into the third period. Intercepting a pass in the neutral zone, the highly touted Rangers prospect showcased his skills by executing a wrap-around move, netting his 19th goal of the season to give his team a commanding 4-0 lead.
The Boston College Eagles will now look ahead to the NCAA National Championship, fueled by the outstanding contributions of Rangers prospects Gabe Perreault and Drew Fortescue. The duo's impressive display will undoubtedly have Rangers fans eagerly awaiting their potential future impact in the NHL.
