In a bid to address their bullpen woes, the New York Mets have made a series of moves ahead of the upcoming trade deadline. Despite their stellar performance since June 1, the team recognized the need for upgrades in the relief corps as they push for a playoff spot in the National League.
One setback for the Mets came with the unexpected placement of Dedniel Núñez on the injured list due to a right pronator strain. Núñez had emerged as a pillar in the team's bullpen, delivering impressive performances throughout the season. The 28-year-old rookie has recorded a stellar 2.43 ERA with 45 strikeouts and only eight walks in 33⅓ innings for the Mets.
In addition to Núñez's injury, the Mets also decided to designate veteran reliever Shintaro Fujinami for assignment. Fujinami, who joined the team during the offseason for a significant sum of $3.35 million, was expected to bolster the bullpen. However, his struggles with command, evident during spring training, persisted, leading to his eventual designation for assignment. The Mets opted not to send him to the minors again, instead choosing to part ways with the 30-year-old right-hander.
On a positive note, the team officially reinstated Kodai Senga from the 60-day injured list, preparing for his season debut against the Atlanta Braves. Senga's return presents a welcome addition to the bullpen, as the Mets hope to strengthen their relief pitching in the push towards the playoffs.
Furthermore, the Mets recalled right-hander Eric Orze from Triple-A Syracuse. Orze, 26, had previously made his major league debut on July 8 before being sent back down to the minors two days later. His return provides the Mets with additional pitching options and reinforces their efforts to bolster the bullpen.
Lastly, the Mets designated right-hander Adrian Houser for assignment. Houser, a 31-year-old pitcher, struggled this season with a 5.84 ERA in 23 appearances, including seven starts. The decision to designate him for assignment reflects the team's commitment to improving their pitching staff as they compete for a postseason berth.
As the trade deadline approaches, the New York Mets have taken decisive steps to address their bullpen weaknesses. With the addition of Kodai Senga, the return of Eric Orze, and the unfortunate injuries to Dedniel Núñez, the team is focused on fortifying its relief pitching and maintaining its position in the playoff race.
