In the midst of the NBA trade possibilities, the New York Knicks have engaged in conversations with opposing teams regarding the potential move of their 26-year-old starting center, Mitchell Robinson. The Washington Wizards are among the teams that have discussed Robinson with the Knicks, suggesting that there may be other teams interested as well.

While it would be surprising if the Knicks were to execute a trade before or during the NBA Draft, they would need to take into account the status of unrestricted free agent Isaiah Hartenstein. The team presumably would require clarity on Hartenstein's situation before making a decision on Robinson's future. If a trade were to occur on draft night, it would indicate that the Knicks have confidence in either Hartenstein returning or being able to secure another center.

The Knicks have been preparing for various scenarios involving Robinson and Hartenstein. Sources close to the team reveal that they are considering their options should they lose Hartenstein or decide to trade Robinson. One player that has caught their attention is Goga Bitadze, the center for the Orlando Magic, although there are likely other centers being evaluated for this potential scenario.

Hartenstein's decision will be crucial, and it is speculated that he may return to New York if the Knicks offer is competitive with a slightly higher offer from another team. The Knicks have his Early Bird Rights, allowing them to offer him a contract starting at around $16 million in the first year, which can be extended for up to four years, totaling $72 million.

However, teams with available cap space, such as the Orlando Magic and Oklahoma City Thunder, can potentially offer Hartenstein significantly more money than the Knicks. This could sway his decision, especially considering the differences in state income tax between New York, Oklahoma, and Florida.

The Knicks entered the free agency period feeling optimistic about their chances of retaining both Hartenstein and OG Anunoby. However, they are well aware that both players will attract interest from other teams in the open market.

It is important to note that trade discussions are common at this point in the NBA calendar, and several teams, including the Dallas Mavericks, have inquired about the situation of Jerami Grant in Portland. Grant, who has a five-year, $160 million contract with the Trail Blazers, may have a different value in the future due to the expected increase in the salary cap.

As the Knicks navigate the offseason, they will continue to assess their options and strategically plan for what lies ahead, considering the factors of their current players, potential trades, and the evolving landscape of the NBA.
