Initially scheduled for 1500 local time on Saturday, the qualifying round at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace was delayed due to severe rainfall compounded by thunder and lightning, which left the track flooded.
Given the unthinkable weather, the session was continuously postponed until it became evident that conditions would not improve. The FIA and Formula 1 had no choice but to reschedule the event. Consequently, qualifying has now been moved to 0730 local time on Sunday morning and the Sao Paulo Grand Prix itself has been brought forward to 1230 local time.
In an official statement, the FIA and Formula 1 emphasized that safety remains their foremost priority. "Following the conditions in São Paulo today, the decision was taken not to proceed with Qualifying due to poor visibility, standing water on the track, and fading light," the statement read. They acknowledged the efforts to wait out the storm in hopes of improved conditions but ultimately decided postponement was necessary.
The governing bodies expressed their gratitude to the spectators who braved the poor weather in anticipation of the event. "We have huge appreciation for all the fans that stayed at the circuit in hope of seeing cars on track today," the statement continued.
To ensure the fans still witness a day of thrilling racing action, the rescheduling aims to maximize favorable weather conditions. The FIA and Formula 1 added, "This will ensure we maximise the chances of providing the fans with a day of racing action, given the ongoing weather forecast for tomorrow afternoon."
The statement concluded with a note of thanks to everyone involved, including fans, drivers, teams, marshals, circuit staff, and media. The organizers hope to deliver an exciting event on Sunday with the new schedule.
