In a recent privacy policy update, NBCUniversal is giving residents of certain states the ability to opt out of the sale or sharing/processing of their personal information for targeted advertising activities. The media company aims to provide a more relevant online experience for users while also ensuring privacy protection.

The update, which is in line with applicable laws, allows residents of states listed in the 'Your Rights' section of NBCUniversal's Privacy Policy to take control of their personal data. By submitting a form or toggling the "Allow Sale of My Personal Info or Sharing/Processing for Targeted Ads" button under Manage Preferences to OFF, users can opt out of having their personal information, such as cookies and device identifiers, used for targeted ads and related purposes.

However, it is important to note that these choices are specific to the brand's website or app on the browser or device where the election is made. Users must also make these preferences on each site/app and browser/device they use to access NBCUniversal services. Additionally, if cookies are cleared, the choice must be renewed.

For residents of states not listed in the 'Your Rights' section, these options will not apply, even if the toggle button is switched off. NBCUniversal emphasizes that users will still see ads if the toggle is turned off, but they may be less relevant or based only on first-party information.

To further address privacy concerns, NBCUniversal mentions that certain online ad partners may combine personal information made available by the media company with data across different businesses to assist in advertising activities. This combination of data may be considered "selling" or "sharing/processing" under applicable law.

NBCUniversal also highlights the importance of managing precise geolocation permissions for their mobile apps through mobile device settings. This ensures that users have control over how their location information is used for targeted advertising purposes.

Lastly, the privacy policy update states that some cookies are required for service functionality, including security and fraud prevention, as well as enabling purchasing capabilities. While users have the option to block these cookies in their browser settings, it is important to note that certain parts of the site may not function properly if these cookies are blocked.

With these opt-out options and privacy enhancements, NBCUniversal is taking steps to prioritize user privacy and consent in their targeted advertising activities. It is part of the constant efforts employed by media companies to strike a balance between personalization and privacy in the digital age.
