The fine, which matches the maximum penalty allowed under the current collective bargaining agreement, equals the amount imposed on former Philadelphia guard James Harden for his previous public trade demand.

Gobert's remarks came after a technical foul was called against him during the closing seconds of regulation in the Timberwolves' 113-104 overtime loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night. The center rubbed his fingers together in the form of a money sign, specifically targeting Foster.

Acknowledging the consequences of his actions, Gobert stated, "I'll bite the bullet again. I'll be the bad guy. I'll take the fine, but I think it's hurting our game. I know the betting and all that is becoming bigger and bigger, but it shouldn't feel that way."

The NBA quickly responded to Gobert's statement, citing the inappropriate and unprofessional gesture directed towards the game official and his public criticism of the officiating. Joe Dumars, the NBA's executive vice president for basketball operations, announced the hefty fine, emphasizing that it takes into account Gobert's history of conduct detrimental to the NBA through public criticism of officials.

This is the fourth time Gobert has been fined for such behavior. Despite the financial setback, the center continues to be a pivotal player for the Timberwolves, earning a salary of $41 million this season.

The NBA's decision to issue this significant fine underscores the league's commitment to maintaining professionalism and integrity within the sport. It sends a clear message that public criticism of officials, inappropriate gestures, and the suggestion of gambling's influence on game outcomes will not be tolerated.

As the NBA strives to protect the integrity of the game and ensure fair competition, Gobert's hefty fine serves as a reminder to all players to adhere to the league's code of conduct and to address any concerns through appropriate channels rather than resorting to public criticism.
