In a thrilling Game 2 of the Western Conference finals, the Dallas Mavericks secured a dramatic 109-108 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, the game was not without controversy, as the NBA has admitted to a missed call in the final minute that could have altered the outcome.
With just 50 seconds remaining and the Timberwolves holding a slim 108-106 lead, Anthony Edwards passed the ball to Jaden McDaniels near the baseline. McDaniels was surrounded by Mavericks stars Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić, and in an attempt to catch the ball, McDaniels lost control and the ball went out of bounds.
Initially, the play was ruled in favor of the Timberwolves, but Mavericks coach Jason Kidd challenged the call and emerged victorious, resulting in a turnover and possession for Dallas. However, the NBA's Last Two Minute Report indicated that a foul should have been called on Kyrie Irving for slapping McDaniels's forearm, leading to the loss of control.
The report clearly stated, "Irving (DAL) makes contact with McDaniels' (MIN) forearm, causing him to lose control of the ball." The missed foul call would have resulted in McDaniels going to the free-throw line with a chance to extend the Timberwolves' lead to four points.
Unfortunately for Minnesota, the call was not made, and the Mavericks took advantage of the turnover. Despite missing a three-point attempt on the subsequent possession, Luka Dončić and his team managed to score the final three points of the game, ultimately securing a 2-0 series lead.
The Last Two Minute Report also explained why officials could not call the foul on Irving during the review. According to the report, "A personal foul is not a reviewable matter when instant replay review of an out-of-bounds violation is triggered by a challenge, nor is a no-call a challengeable event."
The controversy surrounding the missed call adds an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming Game 3 between the Timberwolves and the Mavericks, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday at the American Airlines Center. Both teams will be eager to gain the upper hand in the series and capitalize on this pivotal match.
As the series continues, fans and analysts alike will be closely watching for any further missed calls or controversial moments that could shape the outcome of the Western Conference finals.
