**Uncertainty Looms Over Knicks as Landry Shamet Suffers Shoulder Injury**
The New York Knicks and head coach Tom Thibodeau are facing a challenging situation as the extent of Landry Shamet's shoulder injury remains unclear. After suffering the injury during a game against the Charlotte Hornets, Shamet was seen wearing a sling over his right arm the following day, raising doubts about his availability for the start of the season.
Shamet, who was anticipated to be a key player off the Knicks' bench, now leaves a void in their rotation. "It's very tough. Obviously, we're praying for the best for him," said Jalen Brunson after practice. "It's a difficult situation to see, but every minute I've been able to talk to him and compete with him during this camp. Just seeing him from afar for the past six years, being in the same draft class, he's been nothing but a great professional." Brunson remains optimistic, confident that Shamet will bounce back stronger.
The 27-year-old Shamet injured his shoulder while defending a drive by Charlotte's Moussa Diabate in the third quarter of Tuesday night's game. Thibodeau highlighted Shamet's skills and impact on the team, saying, "I really liked the way [he plays], the speed and versatility, his ability to make plays off the dribble, to shoot the ball, to move without the ball, to read defenses, to understand what's going on on the floor, and he helps bring the best out of everyone."
With Shamet sidelined, Thibodeau faces decisions regarding the lineup. Potential replacements include draft picks like Tyler Kolek or Pacome Dadiet, and veterans on tryout deals such as T.J. Warren or Chuma Okeke. Thibodeau might also opt for a shorter rotation, utilizing starting wings like Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, and Mikal Bridges, or including returning players such as Deuce McBride and Cam Payne.
Additionally, the Knicks could consider waiving Shamet from his non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 contract, which would only cost $15,000 under the injury-protection clause and free up a roster spot. This move could make room for another veteran player, possibly even a return for forward Marcus Morris Sr.
As they approach their final preseason game against the Wizards and their regular-season opener against the Celtics, the Knicks are focusing on maintaining their momentum. "Regardless, it's always a next-man-up mentality," said Brunson. "It's something that I've seen here since I've been here. That doesn't change, regardless of who's out there. We just have to continue to build off that and not get complacent."
The Knicks, who boast a 4-0 record in the preseason, are determined to adapt and persevere as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
