In the main event of UFC Louisville, middleweight contender Nassourdine Imavov emerged victorious with a fourth-round TKO win over veteran Jared Cannonier. However, the outcome of the fight was marred by controversy as fans and fighters questioned whether the referee made a premature decision to stop the bout.
Imavov had Cannonier visibly rocked leading up to the stoppage, but there is an argument that referee Jason Herzog intervened too quickly. Several UFC fighters expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision on social media, criticizing the stoppage as "horrible" and "whack."
Defending his victory, Imavov stood firm, stating that the referee made the right call to protect Cannonier from further damage. He emphasized that Cannonier had already absorbed significant punishment and would have suffered more if the fight had continued. Imavov insisted that the rule to protect oneself at all times was not being adhered to by Cannonier.
Addressing the media, Imavov expressed his willingness to continue the fight had the referee allowed it but acknowledged that the right decision was made and he was satisfied with the outcome. With his focus firmly on securing a shot at the belt, Imavov called out former champion Sean Strickland for a rematch, specifically in his hometown of Paris.
Imavov's loss to Strickland earlier this year has been a motivating factor for the Frenchman. However, Strickland has been dismissive of a potential rematch, urging Imavov to climb the rankings before entertaining the idea. Despite this, Imavov remains undeterred, stating that he can't force Strickland to fight him but is prepared to face any opponent in Paris, emphasizing his desire to stay active.
Imavov believes that he is already deserving of a title shot and wants to take revenge against Strickland at the middleweight limit. However, he understands that the decision ultimately lies with the UFC. The 28-year-old fighter expressed confidence in his abilities, stating that he can progress even further and is already at a level to compete for the title.
With his victory over Cannonier, Nassourdine Imavov advances his professional record to 14-4. His dominant performance has undoubtedly propelled him closer to his goal of securing a big-money rematch with Sean Strickland in Paris and ultimately vying for the middleweight championship title.
