The NASCAR Cup Series is gearing up for an exciting weekend as it returns to the streets of Chicago for a thrilling festival of cars and concerts. Viewers can catch all the action on NBC and Peacock, with pre-race coverage beginning at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday.
As we enter the 20th race of the season, let's take a closer look at where each Cup organization stands.
23XI Racing has some good news to start. Tyler Reddick, who has been a force on the road courses, has claimed all three of his Cup wins in the Next Gen car. Impressively, Reddick has finished in the top 10 in 10 out of the last 12 road course races. However, Bubba Wallace faced an unfortunate setback, falling 51 points below the playoff cutline, despite a seventh-place finish at Nashville.
Front Row Motorsports also has reason to celebrate. Michael McDowell secured an impressive second-place finish at Sonoma, the most recent road course race. Todd Gilliland has been consistent with eight consecutive top-20 finishes. However, their victory drought extends to 31 races, with their last win coming from McDowell at the Indianapolis road course back in August 2023.
Hendrick Motorsports has been a dominant force on the road courses this season. The organization has already claimed victory in both road course races, with William Byron winning at COTA and Kyle Larson emerging triumphant at Sonoma. Byron has been in exceptional form, finishing first or second in three out of the last four road course races. Larson leads the pack with an impressive 207 stage points, surpassing all others except Denny Hamlin by at least 50 points. Chase Elliott has been consistently strong, finishing in the top 20 in all 19 races this season, an achievement not seen since Ricky Rudd accomplished it in 1991. However, Elliott's seven wins on road courses, the most among active drivers, have eluded him in the Next Gen car. Meanwhile, Alex Bowman holds the final playoff spot but has not accumulated any playoff points this year.
Joe Gibbs Racing has seen standout performances from Christopher Bell, who leads the series with nine stage wins this season. Bell has been on a roll, securing at least one stage win in four out of the last six races and leading almost 29% of laps run in the last six races. However, Denny Hamlin's sole road course win dates back to 2016 at Watkins Glen. Martin Truex Jr. has struggled recently, with only one top 10 finish in the past seven races, while Ty Gibbs has also faced a rough patch, failing to secure a top 10 finish in the last five races.
The NASCAR Cup Series in Chicago promises to be a remarkable event, with each Cup organization looking to make their mark on the streets. Will 23XI Racing, Front Row Motorsports, Hendrick Motorsports, or Joe Gibbs Racing claim victory, or will another contender emerge triumphant? Tune in to NBC and Peacock on Sunday to find out.
