In a recent release, the Montana agency has issued a reminder that the state is bear country and urges residents and visitors to be prepared to encounter grizzly or black bears. The agency emphasizes that avoiding conflicts with bears is much easier than dealing with them later.
To help avoid "negative bear encounters," the agency recommends a few precautions. Firstly, carrying bear spray is highly recommended as it can be an effective deterrent. Additionally, traveling in groups is advised, as bears are less likely to approach larger numbers of people.
The North American Bear Center states that grizzly bears, which are found in several US states including Montana, have berries as a part of their diet. Specifically, huckleberries, which reach their peak ripeness in mid-July, make up around half of the diet for the numerous grizzly bears living in Montana's Glacier National Park.
While bear attacks are rare, the National Park Service explains that most bears are typically only interested in protecting their space, food, or cubs. Nevertheless, it is crucial to remain cautious and follow the recommended precautions to minimize the risk of negative bear encounters.
Montana's Glacier National Park, located north of Columbia Falls, is home to hundreds of grizzly bears, making it important for visitors to be aware of bear safety measures. By being prepared and taking appropriate actions, residents and visitors can ensure a safer coexistence with these majestic creatures.
Remember, when in bear country, it is crucial to be informed and alert. By following the mentioned precautions, we can all contribute to a safer environment for both humans and bears alike in Montana.
