In a memorable moment at London Stadium, Rob McElhenney, Chase Utley, and Bryce Harper came together to create a special ceremonial play during the London Series finale against the Mets. The trio, who recently collaborated in a popular promo for the 2024 London Series, delighted fans as they paid homage to a classic episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."
The promo showcased McElhenney's character, Mac, writing letters to Utley about playing catch. The beloved episode, titled "The World Series Defense," originally aired in 2009 and has since become a fan favorite. In this unique continuation, McElhenney has been writing daily letters to Harper, expressing his desire to have a catch with him.
This collaboration between the cast of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and MLB was a great honor for McElhenney. "To get a call from one of my best friends, Chase, and MLB to be a part of growing the sport of baseball in the UK was just such a great honor," he stated.
The excitement was reciprocated by Harper, who expressed his enthusiasm for being a part of the iconic episode. "Just being able to kind of be part of that, I was like, 'Obviously.' This is really, really cool," Harper shared on The Phillies Show podcast.
As the London Series finale approached, McElhenney took to the mound to throw to Utley behind home plate. However, the unexpected happened when McElhenney's wife, Kaitlin Olson, also known for starring in "It's Always Sunny," joined them on the mound for a conference. Surprising the crowd, Harper emerged from the dugout and jogged to first base.
The trio then executed an entertaining play that they called the "first ceremonial 6-4-3 double play." Olson rolled a ball to McElhenney at shortstop, who underhanded it to Utley at second base. Utley, in turn, fired a throw to Harper at first, completing the play to the delight of the spectators.
Reflecting on the experience, McElhenney expressed his gratitude to be a part of the London Series and bring the sport of baseball to new audiences. "Having been [to games] the last few years at Citizens Bank [Park] and you have such an electric atmosphere, I'm just honored to be here and to bring America's pastime across the pond, being just a very small part of it," he shared.
The collaboration between the stars of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and MLB brought joy and nostalgia to fans at London Stadium. This unique fusion of baseball and comedy served as a testament to the enduring appeal of both realms, leaving a lasting impression on all those in attendance.
