**Lando Norris' Errors in Final Lap Cost Him Spanish GP Pole Position**
Lando Norris recently admitted that multiple mistakes during his final qualifying lap cost him the chance to secure pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix. These missteps allowed his McLaren Formula 1 teammate, Oscar Piastri, to clinch the top spot.
Norris had initially been on provisional pole after the first Q3 runs, marginally ahead of Piastri by just 0.017 seconds. However, Piastri managed to outpace him with a finishing time of 1m11.546s, compared to Norris' 1m11.755s on his final attempt. The Briton acknowledged that errors at Turn 1 and the exit of Turn 4 led to what he described as "not the cleanest lap," ultimately costing him 0.209s.
Reflecting on the qualifying session, Norris admitted, "Turn 1 is the last place you want to make a mistake because it affects the rest of the lap, especially with the tyres. A couple of squiggles there and at the exit of Turn 4 made it less than perfect." Despite the imperfections, Norris still managed to improve his lap time, indicating that the car had the pace but wasn't fully capitalized on due to these errors.
Norris emphasized the car's strong performance throughout the weekend, attributing their success in part to consistent good form in varying conditions. He highlighted the difficulty of managing the tyres in the hot weather, both for a single qualifying lap and over the course of the race. "The car has been good the whole weekend," he said, adding that this consistency provided reassurance ahead of the race day.
Norris added that his efforts to extract more speed from the McLaren F1 car, particularly seen during his previous pole-winning performance at the Monaco GP, had shown progress despite missing the top spot this time. "The speed was there today, but sometimes you just don’t get the perfect lap in," he noted. "I know where I lost time on the final lap – pushing too hard and not keeping it tidy enough, especially on a circuit like Barcelona."
While Norris was discontented with his mistakes, he remained upbeat about his second-place finish. "I'm happy with second, especially in Barcelona," he concluded, stressing the positive takeaways from the weekend’s performance. Despite the disappointment, Norris' optimistic outlook suggests strong potential for the race itself and future events.
