### Microsoft Backs Revamp of Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant

In a remarkable turnaround for the notorious site near Harrisburg, Pa., plans are underway to restart one of the reactors at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. The facility, recognized by its towering concrete cooling structures, has been seen as a symbol of the potential dangers of nuclear energy ever since a partial meltdown occurred in 1979.

Central to this ambitious effort to revitalize Three Mile Island is a significant partnership with Microsoft. The tech behemoth has pledged to purchase all the electricity generated by the reactor, starting as early as 2028, and extending over a 20-year period. This commitment from Microsoft marks a pivotal shift in perspectives on nuclear power within the United States.

This planned resurgence of Three Mile Island showcases the broader movement to increase reliance on nuclear energy to meet the escalating power demands of residential, commercial, and data center infrastructures. The plant's refurbishment will involve extensive work on its intricate network of pipes, valves, pumps, and turbines, located on a small piece of land in the middle of the Susquehanna River.

In collaboration with Constellation, Microsoft’s agreement underscores a significant change in the energy landscape, where nuclear power plants are now being sought after for their ability to generate substantial, continuous electricity without emitting greenhouse gases. This evolution in viewpoint comes decades after the initial backlash that followed the incident in 1979, illustrating a renewed trust in nuclear power as a crucial player in combating climate change.
