Miami Dolphins Seek Pass Rush Reinforcements Ahead of Training Camp

The Miami Dolphins were dealt a blow just days before the start of training camp as linebacker Shaq Barrett unexpectedly announced his retirement. Barrett, a two-time Super Bowl champion, was projected to be a key starter for the Dolphins this season. With linebackers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb on the Physically Unable to Perform List, Miami finds itself in need of reinforcements to bolster their pass rush.
Although the Dolphins drafted Chop Robinson in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft and added Mohamed Kamara in the fifth round, the team is still in search of experienced players to fill the void until Phillips and Chubb are ready to return.
One potential option for Miami is Carl Lawson, who previously played for the New York Jets. Despite registering seven sacks in the 2022 season, Lawson fell out of favor with the Jets, leading to his release. The Dolphins had shown interest in Lawson before the draft, and given the team's need for pass-rush expertise, revisiting the possibility of signing him seems logical. At 29 years old, Lawson has a solid track record, recording at least five sacks in each of the four seasons where he played at least 12 games.
Another player worth considering is Tyus Bowser, who was recently released by the Baltimore Ravens. Though Bowser missed the entire 2023 season due to a knee injury, he had shown great promise in the seasons prior. In 2021, he recorded a career-high eight sacks and 25 quarterback hurries, establishing himself as a full-time starter. Bowser's familiarity with defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver could make him an appealing option despite the injury concerns.
The Dolphins could also explore the possibility of re-signing Melvin Ingram, who appeared in 20 games for Miami over the last two seasons. Ingram surprised many with six sacks in 2022, showcasing his ability to contribute as a pass rusher. With 12 years of experience, Ingram could be a reliable early-season option alongside defensive line stalwarts Zach Sieler and Calais Campbell.
While the Dolphins are hopeful that Phillips and Chubb will return in the coming months, there is a need for a pass-rush specialist to fortify the defense in the early stages of the season. The team is not looking for someone to play a significant number of snaps, but rather to provide an immediate impact with their expertise in rushing the quarterback.
One player that could have been considered is Emmanuel Ogbah, who had a productive season in 2023. However, concerns about his positional fit and desire to play as a 4-3 defensive end may hinder his chances of returning to Miami.
As the opening day against the Jacksonville Jaguars approaches, it remains uncertain who will start on the edge for the Dolphins. Will Miami add reinforcements through free agency, or will the rookies step up and claim starting roles? Only time will tell, but for now, the Dolphins are actively exploring their options to strengthen their pass rush ahead of training camp.
