In a series of roster moves, the New York Mets have shaken up their lineup, making significant changes to their catching corps and sending two top prospects back to the minors. The Mets have designated catcher Omar Narvaez for assignment, making room for the acquisition of catcher Luis Torrens from their crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees.

According to reports, the Mets will be sending cash considerations of $100,000 to the Yankees in exchange for Torrens. The 28-year-old catcher has spent time with the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, and Yankees, accumulating a career batting average of .227/.289/.354 in 807 MLB plate appearances. While Torrens has shown a knack for hard contact, his tendency to hit ground balls is considered suboptimal for a player with below-average speed.

The Mets' decision to designate Narvaez for assignment comes as no surprise, as the veteran catcher has struggled to find his stride since joining the team. After a lackluster debut season in Queens, Narvaez opted into the second season of his contract but has failed to improve his performance. With a .154/.191/.185 batting line in 69 plate appearances this year, Narvaez's underwhelming production led to his removal from the roster.

In addition to the catching changes, the Mets have also optioned third baseman Brett Baty and right-handed pitcher Christian Scott to Triple-A Syracuse. Baty, the 12th overall pick in the 2019 draft, has yet to establish himself as an everyday third baseman at the MLB level, posting a .214/.281/.325 line in exactly 600 plate appearances. Meanwhile, Scott has impressed in his five MLB starts, recording a 3.90 ERA with a 22.3% strikeout rate and a 5.4% walk rate.

Taking their spots on the roster will be infielder Jose Iglesias, whose contract will be selected from Syracuse, and right-handed pitcher Dedniel Nunez, who will be recalled from Triple-A. Iglesias, known for his plus defensive skills and contact ability, has a career batting line of .279/.319/.382 in over 4,000 plate appearances. Nunez, who has already had two stints with the Mets this season, has showcased his talent in limited appearances, holding opponents to three runs in 8 1/3 innings with a solid 13 strikeouts.

The Mets' roster moves come as they aim to clear a path for Mark Vientos to take over as their everyday third baseman. Vientos, known as one of the organization's top prospects, has been impressive in limited playing time, hitting .295/.354/.591 with three home runs in just 48 plate appearances.

The Mets' decision to acquire Torrens, send Narvaez packing, and make changes to their Triple-A roster reflects their determination to optimize their lineup and provide opportunities for promising young players. With the injury to catcher Francisco Alvarez and ongoing roster adjustments, the Mets' catching situation remains fluid, and Torrens will have to compete with Tomas Nido for playing time until Alvarez's return.

As the season progresses, it would not be surprising to see the Mets explore additional roster changes, potentially including trade scenarios for members of their rotation. As of now, the rotation consists of Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, Jose Quintana, Tylor Megill, and David Peterson, with potential changes on the horizon.

The Mets hope that these roster moves will invigorate the team and lead to improved performances both behind the plate and on the field as they look to climb the standings in a competitive National League East division.
