In a significant setback for the New York Mets, their star pitcher Kodai Senga has been transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster for reliever Tyler Jay. Senga, who is currently recovering from a strained posterior capsule in his right shoulder, won't be eligible to return from the injured list until May 27.

The decision to shift Senga to the 60-day injured list provides a benefit to the Mets, as he will no longer count against the team's 40-man roster limit. The 31-year-old pitcher has been sidelined since early Spring Training due to the shoulder capsule strain. After a month-long period without throwing, Senga started a flat-ground throwing program in late March.

However, Senga has yet to resume mound work. Once he does begin throwing from the mound, he will need to progress through a series of bullpen sessions, live batting practice sessions, and eventually game action. The Mets have planned to space out Senga's rehab starts, ensuring that he gets an extra day of rest between outings.

Senga was the Mets' most dominant pitcher last year, recording a remarkable 12-7 record with a 2.98 ERA and 202 strikeouts in his debut season in the major leagues. Prior to joining the Mets, he enjoyed a successful 11-year career as an ace pitcher in Japan. His performance in Japan earned him a lucrative five-year, $75 million contract with New York in 2022.

Interestingly, Senga has an opt-out clause in his contract following the 2025 season. To exercise this provision, he must accumulate at least 233 2/3 innings before that time. Mets fans will undoubtedly be eagerly awaiting his return, hoping that he can regain his dominant form and lead the team to success on the mound once again.
