In the latest installment of ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper's mock draft, he predicts that the Kansas City Chiefs will address both the wide receiver and offensive tackle positions in the upcoming NFL draft.
According to Kiper's predictions, the Chiefs will select wide receiver Xavier Legette from South Carolina with the 32nd overall pick. Legette had an impressive season in 2023, racking up 1,255 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He also showcased his speed with a remarkable 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the combine, solidifying his position among the top wide receiver prospects.
This marks the fourth consecutive mock draft in which Kiper has connected the Chiefs with a wide receiver. Previously, he had projected Oregon's Troy Franklin, Texas' Xavier Worthy, and Texas' Adonai Mitchell to Kansas City in his earlier mock drafts. However, in this latest prediction, Franklin is projected to go to the Indianapolis Colts at 46th overall, Worthy to the Los Angeles Chargers (after trading into the 23rd spot), and Mitchell to the Detroit Lions at the 29th selection.
While Kiper believes that the Chiefs could have chosen from other wide receiver prospects like Keon Coleman from Florida State, Ricky Pearsall from Florida, or Ladd McConkey from Georgia, he envisions the team opting for Legette instead.
Moving on to the second round, Kiper foresees the Chiefs bolstering their offensive line by selecting offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia from BYU with the 64th overall pick. With the 2023 tackle starter Donovan Smith yet to be signed, the Chiefs currently have Wanya Morris at left tackle but lack depth at the position. Suamataia, who played both left and right tackle in college, demonstrated significant progress while playing on the left side during his last season. Known for his strength, quickness, and ability to navigate the run game, Suamataia is ranked as Kiper's ninth best offensive tackle prospect in this draft class.
In recent weeks, various mock drafts had predicted the Chiefs to target a tackle in the first round. However, Kiper's mock draft suggests that they have the opportunity to secure a reliable tackle in the second round. This could be attributed to the Chiefs' signing of free agent wide receiver Hollywood Brown and the unfortunate traffic accident involving second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice, which might have influenced the change in predictions.
As the NFL draft approaches, these projections provide an intriguing glimpse into the potential moves the Kansas City Chiefs could make to strengthen their roster. Ultimately, it remains to be seen if Kiper's predictions align with the Chiefs' actual draft strategy, but fans are eagerly awaiting the draft to see how their team will shape up for the upcoming season.
