The ongoing measles outbreak in Chicago has reached another county, as the Will County Health Department announced a positive case of measles. Located south/southwest of Chicago, Will County joins Lake County in the north suburbs, where a measles case connected to the outbreak was recently confirmed.

The Will County Health Department has been closely collaborating with the Illinois Department of Public Health to manage the situation. Through case investigation, it has been determined that the measles case in Will County is linked to the rash of cases in the City of Chicago.

According to the latest data from the Chicago Department of Public Health, there have been a total of 26 confirmed cases of measles among Chicagoans in 2024. This includes four new cases reported in the current week from Sunday (March 24) to Saturday (March 30). The data, which is updated daily at 8 a.m., can be accessed on the Chicago Department of Public Health's website.

The Will County Health Department has not provided specific details regarding locations or dates of possible exposure in their release. However, they are actively working to reach out to individuals who may have come into contact with the measles. The department's Communicable Disease staff is diligently collecting additional information to identify and notify those who may have been exposed. They will also provide education and recommend appropriate measures to prevent further infection.

To protect against measles, Will County's Communicable Disease Program Manager, Muneeza Azher, emphasizes the importance of vaccination. Azher advises anyone who is not vaccinated to strongly consider getting the vaccine. Those unsure of their vaccination status are encouraged to consult with their healthcare provider to determine if they need a measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Parents with children who are 1 year or older and have not yet received the MMR vaccine are urged to contact their child's pediatrician to discuss vaccination options.

The Will County Health Department is taking proactive measures to address the measles outbreak in the county and ensure the safety of the community. As the number of confirmed measles cases continues to climb in Chicago, it is crucial for individuals to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the further spread of this highly contagious disease.
