In a highly anticipated Formula 1 race at the Dutch Grand Prix, McLaren showcased their prowess during the first day of practice, positioning themselves as strong contenders for victory. While Mercedes set the pace over a single lap, McLaren demonstrated an edge over the long runs, and Max Verstappen's Red Bull team was left with some catching up to do.
Verstappen started the session impressively, securing the second-fastest time on the medium tire with just one flying lap. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton gradually worked his way to the quickest time on the same tire over three consecutive flying laps. In the qualifying simulations, the top five runners all recorded similar lap times, indicating that Mercedes had a slight advantage at this stage, accounting for variations in fuel levels and engine modes.
Unfortunately for Ferrari, the team appeared to struggle against the windy conditions. Charles Leclerc could only manage ninth place, finishing behind an Aston Martin, an RB, and a Haas. This result was not indicative of what one would normally expect from the Ferrari car.
McLaren, on the other hand, performed exceptionally well on the track, particularly in the hands of their driver, Lando Norris. This was confirmed emphatically during the longer runs. Both Verstappen and Norris used the medium tire with heavier fuel loads simultaneously, and it was Norris who displayed a clear advantage. His run was not only faster but also more consistent than Verstappen's. Moreover, Verstappen's run was slower than Hamilton's, with the latter benefitting from a cool-down lap and a brief pit stop mid-run.
The battle intensified as Verstappen and Norris switched to the soft tire, with McLaren once again demonstrating superior performance. Although the margin narrowed, McLaren remained quicker than Red Bull on this tire, showing great promise for the team.
During the longer runs, a thrilling showdown between McLaren and Mercedes transpired on the soft tire. While George Russell marginally outpaced Oscar Piastri for McLaren, Russell experienced a drop-off in performance earlier than Piastri. The windy conditions presented challenges for all drivers, particularly with the difficult-to-handle Red Bull car.
Taking all factors into account, it appears that the upgraded McLaren has established itself as the favorite after day one at Zandvoort. With their impressive pace over long runs and strong showings from Lando Norris, McLaren has firmly positioned themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix.
