During a Produced By panel at the Fox Studios, Max Head of Original Content, Sarah Aubrey, shared the news that Max series Tokyo Vice has come to an end after two successful seasons. The announcement was made in the presence of Tokyo Vice creator J.T. Rogers and EP/director Alan Poul.

Expressing their gratitude, a Max spokesperson stated, "From Tokyo Vice's richly written material to the gorgeously composed shots to the lived-in performances, the care and creativity of this enormously talented cast and crew shines in every frame of the show." Max extended their appreciation to J.T., Alan, Ansel, Ken, Fifth Season, and Wowow for their partnership in creating this "wholly unique modern noir thriller."

Tokyo Vice, which first aired in 2022, stars Ansel Elgort as a western journalist working for a Tokyo newspaper who becomes entangled with one of the city's most powerful crime bosses. The series garnered significant praise and a dedicated fanbase.

Rogers and Poul expressed their gratitude towards Max for their continuous support throughout the past five years. They acknowledged Max's commitment to letting them tell their story by granting the request to end season one with a series of cliffhangers and providing two extra episodes for a satisfying conclusion. Rogers and Poul also thanked Fifth Season, their partner in selling the show globally, for their unwavering support in bringing their vision to life.

The response to Tokyo Vice, particularly its second season, has been overwhelming. Viewers have deeply engaged with the characters, and demand for more content has been high. Rogers and Poul acknowledged the desire to continue the story, stating, "We know there is more story to tell."

Despite the series coming to a close, the creators remain hopeful for future possibilities. Aubrey expressed her excitement, mentioning that Tokyo Vice was one of the first series she acquired for HBO Max. Rogers shared his personal connection to the story, having met the author Jake Adelstein during drivers ed. Adelstein, much like Elgort's character, covered the Yakuza as a journalist in Japan. Poul, who has experience shooting in Japan dating back to the set of the 1980s film Black Rain, highlighted the challenges they faced during production.

Tokyo Vice faced an initial delay between seasons due to the ramp-up of production in Japan and a larger episode order of ten. Nonetheless, the series thrived and became a global success story.

As fans bid farewell to Tokyo Vice, they eagerly await news of any potential future developments. Max series Tokyo Vice has left an indelible mark on its viewers, and it remains to be seen if the story will continue.
