In a post-race interview, Mathieu van der Poel opened up about his experience at the Amstel Gold Race, acknowledging the challenging nature of the competition. Despite not feeling his best during the race, Van der Poel expressed satisfaction with his overall performance, emphasizing the team's strong showing.

Van der Poel had initially planned to stay with the lead group as they tackled the Keutenberg, but unfortunately, the riders broke away before he could make his move. The Dutch cyclist showed his strength by responding to a move made by Richard Carapaz at the Eyserbosweg, but he was unable to react to subsequent attacks from Marc Hirschi and Tom Pidcock.

Feeling the strain on his legs, Van der Poel admitted that he had to take calculated risks during the race, knowing that jumping too early would invite immediate responses from his competitors. He recognized the difference in racing style between the cobbled classics and the hilly terrain of the Amstel Gold Race, and made a conscious decision to adopt a more defensive approach.

Van der Poel expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, highlighting their ability to adapt to the race's challenging dynamics. However, he acknowledged that his lack of offensive power and inability to react to every move could lead to being penalized in this demanding race.

Looking ahead, Van der Poel confirmed his commitment to continue his Classics campaign until Liège-Bastogne-Liège, which will take place next Sunday. He recognized the tough competition he would face, especially with Tadej Pogačar considered the favorite for the race. This will be Van der Poel's second appearance in La Doyenne, after finishing in 6th place on his debut in the pandemic-delayed edition of 2020.

Remaining grounded and realistic, Van der Poel understands that winning every race is not always possible. Nevertheless, he expressed his determination to give his all in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, even though he anticipates a greater challenge compared to the Amstel Gold Race.

As fans eagerly await the conclusion of the Classics season, all eyes now turn to Van der Poel's upcoming performance at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, where he will undoubtedly bring his trademark resilience and determination to the race.
