In a shocking turn of events, Massimiliano Allegri has been sacked by Juventus, the club confirmed on Friday. The decision comes just two days after their victorious Coppa Italia final against Atalanta. Allegri's behavior during and after the match led to his suspension and subsequent dismissal from the club.
During stoppage time in the final, Allegri grew furious at a decision and ripped off his jacket in anger. He sarcastically applauded the referee, earning himself a red card. Juventus expressed their disappointment in a statement, stating that Allegri's actions were not in line with the club's values.
Aside from being suspended for two games, Allegri was also fined $5,400 by the Serie A league judge. The judge reported that Allegri "acted aggressively" and used insulting language and gestures towards the referees. Italian media additionally reported that Allegri displayed confrontational behavior towards journalists after the match.
The Italian football federation, FIGC, has initiated an investigation into the incidents that took place during the final. Allegri, along with Tuttosport newspaper's director Guido Vaciago, are involved in the ongoing investigation. The FIGC's Prosecutor Office is currently looking into the matter.
While Allegri's tenure at Juventus had a successful initial stint, winning five consecutive Serie A titles from 2015 to 2019, his second term proved to be more challenging. The team currently sits fourth in Serie A and has been banned from European competition due to a false accounting case. The Italian Cup, won earlier this week, became Allegri's final match with the team.
Juventus has yet to announce a replacement for Allegri, but reports suggest that there may have been a rift between the club and the former manager. Speculation is rife that Juventus is considering hiring Thiago Motta from Bologna for the upcoming season.
The departure of Allegri marks a significant change for Juventus, as they seek to bounce back from a disappointing season and reclaim their dominance in Serie A. The club will now look ahead to rebuilding and charting a new course under new leadership.
