Mariners Designate Seby Zavala for Assignment, Call Up Emerson Hancock for Start

In a roster shakeup, the Seattle Mariners have announced that catcher Seby Zavala has been designated for assignment. The corresponding move sees right-hander Emerson Hancock being called up from Triple-A to start today's game against the Blue Jays. Zavala's designation creates an opening on the Mariners' 40-man roster.

This marks the second time in the last three weeks that Zavala has been designated. In his previous trip through DFA limbo, he cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma, but chose to remain with the Mariners and report to the minors. However, due to Zavala being out of minor league options, Seattle was forced to expose him to the waiver wire to move him back down to Triple-A.

Zavala's limited playing time this season, with just 18 games and a .154 batting average, coupled with the Mariners' focus on offense, likely influenced the decision to designate him. With Cal Raleigh and Mitch Garver handling the starting catcher duties, the team has opted for a more bat-first approach.

Meanwhile, Emerson Hancock is set to make his ninth start of the season, as he returns to the majors. He has delivered a 4.79 ERA in his first 41 1/3 innings this season. This call-up comes with Bryan Woo on the 15-day injured list, although Woo is expected to return soon. It is speculated that Saturday's start may be just a spot start for Hancock or even an unofficial audition for potential trade suitors, as the Mariners look to potentially upgrade their lineup at the trade deadline.

The Mariners' roster moves reflect their ongoing efforts to find the right balance between offensive production and defensive strength. Zavala's designation and Hancock's call-up provide opportunities for the team to reassess their options as they navigate the current season.
