In a series of roster moves, the Seattle Mariners announced the promotion of first base prospect Tyler Locklear and the signing of right-hander Matt Bowman. The news was first reported by Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times.
To make room for the newcomers, the Mariners placed first baseman Ty France on the 10-day injured list due to a fractured heel. France, who has been one of the team's hottest hitters since May, will now face a period of recovery and his return timetable is currently uncertain.
Locklear's promotion comes as a result of France's injury and it is reported that he will now serve as the everyday first baseman for the Mariners. The decision to have him as a regular starter, instead of sharing the position with Luke Raley, shows the team's confidence in his abilities.
Joining Locklear on the team is Bowman, a veteran of six major league seasons. Bowman, who has previously played for the Diamondbacks and Twins this year, signed a minor league deal with the Mariners. He impressed during his two scoreless appearances with the team's Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma, earning him the call-up to the major leagues.
Bowman's addition to the Mariners bullpen comes at a crucial time, as the team has been plagued by injuries to key players such as Matt Brash, Gregory Santos, and Gabe Speier. While he hasn't had standout performances in recent years, his 3.51 ERA in Triple-A suggests he could be a solid option for middle relief.
In corresponding moves, right-hander Collin Snider was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Bowman. Snider had a brief stint with the Mariners before being sent back to the minors. His return to the Triple-A roster will provide depth for the team moving forward.
To accommodate Locklear and Bowman on the 40-man roster, right-handers Levi Stoudt and Eduardo Salazar were designated for assignment. Neither pitcher has appeared in the majors this season. Salazar, claimed off waivers from the Dodgers just two weeks ago, struggled with a 6.91 ERA in his limited major league outings. Stoudt, acquired from the Reds in February, has struggled at the Triple-A level with a 6.92 ERA.
The Mariners will now have one week to decide the fate of Stoudt and Salazar. They can either trade them or attempt to pass them through waivers. If they clear waivers, the Mariners have the option to outright them to the minor leagues.
The Mariners' roster moves aim to strengthen their lineup and bullpen as they continue their pursuit of success this season. Locklear's promotion and Bowman's signing bring fresh talent and depth to the team, providing them with additional options as they battle through the remainder of the year.
