In Larimer County, mandatory evacuations have been ordered near Storm Mountain and Palisade Mountain due to the Alexander Mountain Fire, which has already consumed approximately 250 acres of land. The fire, located about 20 miles west of Loveland, has caused thick smoke that is visible as far as Fort Collins and Boulder.
The Larimer County Sheriff's Office, along with the U.S. Forest Service and Loveland Fire Rescue, are currently responding to the wildfire. The evacuation zone stretches from Drake to Dam Store along Highway 34, prompting its closure in both directions. Nearby residents have been instructed to evacuate immediately.
To accommodate evacuees, two evacuation centers have been established. Namaqua Elementary School, located at 209 North Namaqua Avenue, and the Estes Park Events Complex at 1125 Rooftop Way are welcoming those affected by the mandatory evacuation orders. Animals can be taken to The Ranch at 5290 Arena Circle.
According to the latest reports, the fire had initially grown to 800 acres by 12:35 p.m., but subsequent aerial mapping by the U.S. Forest Service estimated it to be around 250 acres. The fire is currently burning on Forest Service land, and efforts are underway to extinguish it. The Forest Service has deployed a local helicopter and called for additional helicopters to assist in firefighting operations.
Earlier, voluntary evacuations were issued around 12:15 p.m. for areas including Waltonia Road, Eden Valley to Sunrise Ranch, and Sylvan Dale to Ellis Ranch.
Linda Renaud, a resident near Storm Mountain, spoke about the situation, stating that although the fire doesn't appear to be immediately close to her, she can see the smoke from her hilltop. Renaud is prepared for evacuation after having experienced the Cameron Peak Fire in 2020. She mentioned packing essentials and ensuring the safety of her pets.
As the Alexander Mountain Fire continues to threaten the area, authorities urge residents to stay away from Highway 34 and abide by evacuation orders for their own safety. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office is closely monitoring the situation and providing updates.
