Innisbrook, FL - Peter Malnati, the professional golfer known for his precision on the course, found himself in a tough spot during the final round of the Valspar Championship. However, a fortuitous rules ruling gave him the boost he needed to secure a critical advantage and ultimately claim the victory.
Malnati was battling for the lead with Cam Young on Sunday when his approach shot on the treacherous 16th hole landed in the rough just left of the green. The challenging lie threatened to impede his chances of making par until he stumbled upon an unexpected silver lining – a nearby sprinkler head interfering with his chipping stance.
According to the Rules of Golf, players are permitted to take free relief from immovable obstructions that hinder their intended swing or stance. With the help of PGA Tour rules official, Steve Rintoul, Malnati carefully tested multiple stances to determine his nearest point of complete relief.
Pointing to the edge of the first cut with his club, Malnati confidently declared, "My nearest point is right here." The relief was granted, and Malnati was allowed to drop the ball in the shorter grass, ultimately settling it on the fringe.
"This could be a huge break," acknowledged walking reporter Aaron Oberholser, recognizing the significance of the ruling on Malnati's game. The golfer himself expressed his gratitude, stating, "I feel this is a great break, and I want you to be here."
Following the successful drop, Malnati faced a challenging 50-foot putt that he managed to send about 5 feet past the hole. Undeterred, he calmly sunk the comeback putt to save par, maintaining his tie with Young.
Malnati's exceptional play continued on the next hole, the par-3 17th, where he impressively landed his tee ball to within 6 feet of the hole. With nerves of steel, he confidently sank the putt, pushing him to 12 under par.
Meanwhile, Young faltered on his final hole with a costly three-putt, allowing Malnati to secure a closing par and a two-shot victory. This triumph marks Malnati's first PGA Tour win since his inaugural victory at the 2015 Sanderson Farms Championship.
For Malnati, the favorable rules ruling proved to be a turning point in the tournament, providing him with a critical advantage and setting him on the path to victory at the Valspar Championship.
