In a preseason game against the Detroit Lions, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce showcased their remarkable chemistry with a behind-the-back pass that caught everyone's attention. What seemed like a perfectly executed trick play, however, turned out to be a moment of frustration for Mahomes, who was left yelling at his teammate on the field.
The play unfolded in the first quarter, with Mahomes receiving the snap and faking a handoff to fullback Carson Steele. He then cleverly feigned a run towards the first down marker, fooling the Lions' defense. Just as they took the bait, Mahomes surprised everyone by flipping the ball behind his back to Kelce. The talented tight end not only secured the first down but also gained additional yardage, leaving fans in awe.
After the game, Mahomes candidly admitted that the play wasn't originally intended to be a behind-the-back pass. Frustrated with Kelce for not running the route he was supposed to, Mahomes improvised and threw the unexpected pass out of spite. "Travis didn't run the route he was supposed to run," Mahomes stated. "I was mad, so I threw a behind-the-back pass, but now it's gonna be a highlight."
However, Kelce had a different perspective on the mishap. He playfully explained that Mahomes' voice was garbled when he called the play, making it difficult for Kelce to grasp the instructions. "He's got the voice thing, so he kind of mumbled out the play," Kelce joked in a hoarse, Kermit the Frog-like voice. "I was trying to decipher what he was saying as I walked up to the line."
Interestingly, this isn't the first time Mahomes has been playfully teased for his voice resembling that of Kermit the Frog. Just last month, the Las Vegas Raiders brought out a Kermit puppet donning a Chiefs jersey and curly hair during Training Camp.
When asked about the trolling, Mahomes responded calmly, stating that it's still early in the year and such incidents happen. "It'll get handled when it gets handled," he remarked, giving a hint that he might address it at a later time.
As the preseason progresses and the team fine-tunes their plays, it remains to be seen how Mahomes and Kelce will navigate their partnership on the field. Perhaps their unexpected behind-the-back pass will serve as a reminder for both players to communicate more clearly and avoid any moments of frustration in future games.
