Louisiana State University's women's basketball head coach, Kim Mulkey, has found herself embroiled in controversy once again. Mulkey took to the podium on Saturday before LSU's NCAA tournament game to address what she called a forthcoming "hit piece" by The Washington Post. She threatened to take legal action against the publication, accusing them of preparing a negative story about her.
According to Mulkey, a Washington Post reporter had allegedly tricked her former assistant coaches into speaking with him and offered anonymity to former players who would speak negatively about her. She declared that she had hired a law firm to sue the publication if they were to publish a false story about her.
Mulkey criticized the reporter for imposing an unreasonably tight deadline on her and LSU to respond to the questions posed in the story. She stated that they were unable to meet this deadline due to their participation in the NCAA finals. Although she did not name the reporter, Post reporter Kent Babb confirmed his involvement in the story to the Associated Press.
"It's these kinds of sleazy tactics and hatchet jobs that people are just tired of," Mulkey voiced her frustrations. Despite this recent controversy, she has been the head coach at LSU for the past three years and played an essential role in securing the university's first national title in basketball, either men's or women's, in 2023. Her previous coaching tenure at Baylor University spanned over 20 years and saw her win three national titles. In 2020, Mulkey was rightly inducted into the prestigious Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
It remains to be seen how the situation between Mulkey and The Washington Post will unfold. With legal action potentially looming, the basketball coach is determined to defend her reputation against what she perceives to be an unfair portrayal.
The Washington Post has yet to respond to these allegations, leaving basketball fans and supporters of both parties eagerly waiting for further developments in this escalating conflict.
