LSU Coach Kim Mulkey Accused of Mistreating LGBTQ+ Players, Insiders Claim

The accusations were detailed in a recent article published by The Washington Post, despite Mulkey's threat of legal action against the newspaper for what she claims are false allegations.
According to the article, Kelli Griffin, a former player under Mulkey at Baylor from 2007 to 2010, accused her former coach of making her life a living "hell" after discovering she was gay. Griffin alleges that Mulkey targeted her, focusing on her appearance and issuing a suspension that ultimately ended her career at Baylor.
Griffin's claims are supported by other former players. Brittney Griner, another ex-Baylor star and member of the LGBTQ+ community, stated in her memoir that Mulkey instructed players to hide their sexuality and keep it behind closed doors. Emily Niemann, another former player, recounted an incident where Mulkey warned her to be careful after being seen with another woman in public, citing Baylor's conservative policies.
The Washington Post's report also highlighted allegations of weight shaming and the use of shame as a coaching tool. Players claimed that Mulkey would call them out for gaining weight and even made the team's strength coach conduct weigh-ins in front of the team.
Mulkey, who is a four-time NCAA Division 1 champion, has denied treating gay players differently and her attorneys have characterized the allegations as too vague to respond to. However, her legal representatives have not addressed the claims that phones were barred from certain team meetings to prevent the recording of Mulkey's alleged tirades.
Despite the controversy surrounding her, Mulkey remains focused on coaching and denied being distracted by The Washington Post's article. She is currently leading the LSU Tigers in their defense of the national title in the March Madness tournament. They are scheduled to face the UCLA Bruins in the Sweet 16 stage on Saturday afternoon.
These allegations against Mulkey have sparked further discussions about the treatment of LGBTQ+ players in sports and the importance of creating inclusive environments. The college basketball community will be closely watching how this controversy unfolds, as it raises important questions regarding equality and fair treatment within the sport.
