In a groundbreaking announcement today, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass shared the city's ambitious plans for the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics, promising that it will be a "no-car Games." Joined by Casey Wasserman, chairman of the LA 2028 organizing committee, Bass emphasized the city's commitment to creating a sustainable and eco-friendly event.
Highlighting the extensive planning already underway, Mayor Bass revealed that public transportation will be the sole mode of access to the Olympic venues. Aiming to tackle the city's notorious traffic congestion and reduce carbon emissions, Los Angeles plans to employ approximately 3,000 buses borrowed from across the country for the duration of the 17-day sporting event.
"We're already working to create jobs by expanding our public transportation system in order for us to have a no-car Games," Mayor Bass stated confidently. She acknowledged that it would be no small task for a city deeply enamored with its cars, but stressed the importance of building a greener Los Angeles.
Mayor Bass also drew inspiration from the 1984 Olympics, where traffic concerns were mitigated successfully. She emphasized that while technology has evolved significantly since then, implementing effective strategies remains possible. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bass pointed out that the widespread adoption of remote work has presented a valuable reference point for potential solutions.
"We learned in Covid that you can work remotely," she stated. "I think, frankly, it is not going to be difficult this time. I think the workforce, probably around the world, certainly around our country, is grappling with remote work now."
While Mayor Bass does not currently have a commitment from local businesses to allow their employees to work from home during the Games, she proposed discussions with the city's major employers to explore options for staggering work hours, a strategy successfully utilized four decades ago.
The announcement has sparked enthusiasm and curiosity among the residents of Los Angeles. With an increased focus on sustainability and the environment, the 2028 Olympics aim to set a precedent for future Olympic Games, demonstrating that even in a car-centric city like Los Angeles, hosting a no-car Games is attainable.
As preparations continue for the 2028 Summer Olympics, Los Angeles is determined to deliver an extraordinary sporting event, showcasing the city's commitment to sustainability and leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come.
