In a surprising move, the Los Angeles Kings have traded center Pierre-Luc Dubois to the Washington Capitals in exchange for goaltender Darcy Kuemper. The teams announced the one-for-one trade on Wednesday, with no salary retained on either side of the deal, as per league sources.
Dubois, 25, had a productive season with the Kings, tallying 40 points (16 goals and 24 assists) in 82 games. However, the trade signifies an admission of a major error on the part of General Manager Rob Blake, who acquired Dubois in the offseason. Dubois struggled to meet expectations during his first season with the Kings, making the trade a necessary move for the franchise.
Furthermore, the trade also allows the Kings to offload the remainder of Dubois' original eight-year, $68 million contract before the full no-move clause came into effect. It also addressed the team's need for a starting goaltender, as they only had veteran backup David Rittich under contract for the upcoming season.
The trade also provided the Kings with an additional $3.25 million in cap space, offering flexibility for Blake to potentially re-sign pending restricted free agent Quinton Byfield or retain unrestricted free agent defenseman Matt Roy. This cap space could also enable the Kings to make additional moves to improve their roster, especially after three consecutive first-round playoff exits to the Edmonton Oilers.
It remains to be seen whether Kuemper, 34, will be the solution to the Kings' goaltending issues. While his performance with the Capitals last season wasn't stellar, losing the starting job to Charlie Lindgren, there is a history between Kuemper and the Kings. During Blake's first season as GM six years ago, Kuemper put up impressive numbers before being traded to the Arizona Coyotes.
The Kings' track record of rehabilitating struggling goalies gives hope that Kuemper can regain his form. Their defense-first approach has previously aided goalies like Cam Talbot and Rittich, resulting in the team having the third-best goals-against average in the league. Additionally, Kuemper's successful stint with the Colorado Avalanche, leading them to the Stanley Cup in 2022, adds to the potential upside of the trade.
Only time will tell if this trade will prove beneficial for both teams involved. The Capitals acquire a skilled center in Dubois, while the Kings address their goaltending needs and gain much-needed salary cap space. As the offseason progresses, fans eagerly await further roster changes that may help propel the Kings towards playoff success.
