LIV Golfers Seek Direct Path to British Open, R&A CEO Looks to Provide Opportunities

In a recent press conference ahead of the British Open, Martin Slumbers, CEO of the R&A, addressed the issue of LIV Golf League players earning direct entry into the prestigious tournament. While acknowledging the presence of 18 LIV players in the field, Slumbers emphasized that the R&A has worked to create opportunities for players worldwide but did not confirm a direct exemption for LIV Golfers.
Last year, LIV Golf withdrew its application for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) accreditation and called on major championships to provide direct access for all top players. However, as of now, none of the major tournaments have made such changes.
The Masters granted LIV Golf's Joaquin Niemann a special invitation after his victory at the Australian Open, a final qualifying series event that secured his spot at Royal Troon. But Chairman Fred Ridley has not altered the invitation criteria for future tournaments.
On the other hand, the PGA Championship demonstrated flexibility by inviting seven LIV players to participate, including Talor Gooch, who won LIV's season-long points race in 2023 but was not exempt for the tournament. The U.S. Open has also shown openness to the idea of direct invitations for LIV players, with CEO Mike Whan expressing feasibility but not committing to the concept.
The British Open, organized by the R&A, has opted for an Open qualifying series and final qualifying events worldwide. While LIV's Dean Burmester and Joaquin Niemann made it through this route, John Catlin qualified via the Malaysian Open, and Laurie Canter secured a spot through the DP World Tour list.
To further support LIV golfers, the Open introduced additional exemption areas for players from the Asian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, PGA of Australasia, and Sunshine Tour. These players can now potentially qualify through the International Federation list, a part of the OWGR.
As R&A CEO, Martin Slumbers is a member of the Official World Golf Ranking board, which has recently faced criticism. LIV Golf sought accreditation in 2022 but was denied, prompting their withdrawal of the application this year.
While discussing other aspects of the game, Slumbers expressed concerns about escalating prize money, reaffirming that the Open aims to focus on increasing participation and improving pathways in golf. Despite raising the purse to $17 million, the Open still offers the lowest prize fund among the four major championships.
In terms of future venues, Slumbers mentioned that Muirfield is under consideration for upcoming Opens. However, the presence of the DP World Tour's Genesis Scottish Open at the neighboring Renaissance Club poses a logistical challenge. Slumbers humorously suggested that he would like DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings to consider moving the Scottish Open to accommodate Muirfield as a host.
Looking ahead, the 2022 Open will return to Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, with Royal Birkdale hosting the championship in 2026.
While the path for direct entry into the British Open remains uncertain for LIV Golf players, Martin Slumbers emphasized that the R&A is committed to providing opportunities for all top players and ensuring the inclusion of the world's best in the tournament.
