The Detroit Lions concluded their preseason with a 24-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, providing an opportunity for the backups to shine and fight for coveted roster spots. With the cut deadline looming, several players made a strong case for themselves, while others may need to seek opportunities elsewhere.
One of the more intriguing storylines revolved around the battle for the backup quarterback position. Sudfeld, who struggled in the preseason opener, has shown improvement throughout training camp and preseason games. Meanwhile, second-year quarterback Hendon Hooker couldn't make a convincing case to seal the job. Sudfeld's absence from the game suggests that he may have secured the backup role.
Isaac Ukwu emerged as an impressive pass rusher during the preseason, showcasing his skills with a sack, a tackle for loss, and a forced fumble. While the Lions have other pressing needs on the roster, if Ukwu makes the final 53, he could provide valuable support as a rotational player. If not, the team could consider retaining him on the practice squad.
The Lions' front seven demonstrated their ability to create pressure, even without the presence of starters on the field. Linebacker Ty Summers led the team with eight tackles, including two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Defensive end James Houston also made an impact with three tackles and a sack. The depth in the front seven provides reassurance for the Lions as they head into the regular season.
Injuries on the offensive line have plagued the Lions in previous seasons, but they received some good news as offensive tackle Penei Sewell, who suffered an ankle injury during practice, is expected to be ready for the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams. However, in the preseason finale against the Steelers, the offensive line struggled to protect the quarterback, allowing five sacks. The running game also faced difficulties, with the Lions' running backs averaging just over three yards per carry.
Hendon Hooker had an opportunity to solidify his position as the backup quarterback but had a slow start against the Steelers. In addition to issues with offensive line play, Hooker struggled with some poor decision-making and incomplete passes. Although he put up decent numbers, going 12-for-20 for 114 yards with a touchdown and an interception, Hooker's performance fell short of securing the backup role. He is likely to be placed as the team's third-string quarterback.
The search for a reliable wide receiver three, particularly for the X spot, continued in the preseason finale. Kalif Raymond seems to have locked down a roster spot, but the Lions ideally desire a big-bodied receiver for that role. However, none of the candidates stood out in the game against the Steelers, leaving the position with more questions than answers. Isaiah Williams had a fair showing with a catch for 17 yards but made a bigger impact in the return game. Kaden Davis led the team in receiving, yet none of the contenders made a compelling case for the role.
As the Lions approach the roster cut deadline, the performances in the preseason finale have provided valuable insights into the team's depth and potential starting lineup. The coaches and management will have difficult decisions to make, weighing the contributions and potential of each player. With the regular season just two weeks away, the Lions must finalize their roster and make the necessary adjustments for a successful campaign.
