In a thrilling 6-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets, Artturi Lehkonen and Valeri Nichushkin of the Colorado Avalanche etched their names into NHL history. Both players have now scored goals in each of the Avs' playoff games this year, marking an unprecedented feat.
No other set of teammates in NHL history has ever had simultaneous postseason-opening goal streaks of five or more games. Prior to Lehkonen and Nichushkin, only two pairs of teammates had achieved a goal streak of four games during the playoffs. Lanny McDonald and Joe Mullen of the Flames accomplished this feat in 1986, while Ron Duguay and Ulf Nilsson of the Rangers did so in 1981.
Nichushkin set the tone for the Avalanche's victory, scoring the team's first goal at the Canada Life Centre with a powerful one-timer. Lehkonen's goal came in the second period when Jets defenseman Neal Pionk inadvertently deflected the puck into his own net. These goals further solidified the duo's remarkable goal-scoring spree.
However, Colorado fans will have to wait a bit to see if Lehkonen and Nichushkin can maintain their simultaneous streaks. With the win in Canada, the Avalanche have advanced to the next round of the playoffs, waiting to discover their next opponent. The series between the Dallas Stars and the Vegas Golden Knights is currently tied at 2-2. The earliest this series could conclude is on Friday, in Game 6. If it extends to a Game 7, it will take place on Sunday, resulting in a significant period of rest for the Avs.
In addition to Lehkonen and Nichushkin's historic achievement, another standout performance came from Mikko Rantanen. In Tuesday night's game, Rantanen scored two crucial goals in the third period, elevating his position on the Avalanche franchise list for the number of scores in potential series-clinching games. With eight goals, Rantanen now shares fourth place with Michel Goulet. Nathan MacKinnon currently occupies the spot in front of him with nine goals, while Peter Forsberg (10) and Joe Sakic (17) hold the franchise's all-time lead.
As the Avalanche move forward in the playoffs, the contributions from Lehkonen, Nichushkin, and Rantanen will undoubtedly be crucial to their success. Fans eagerly await their next matchup and hope to witness more historic moments as the quest for the Stanley Cup continues.
