Left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz has been released by the Los Angeles Dodgers, as reported by MLB.com's transactions tracker. Pomeranz, who had previously opted out of a deal with the Dodgers in April before re-signing, now finds himself back on the open market. The details surrounding his release and whether he triggered an opt-out clause this time remain unknown.
The 35-year-old Pomeranz has been eager to make a comeback this season after battling injuries in recent years. During the offseason, he signed a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Angels but was subsequently released. He then inked two separate minor league deals with the Dodgers.
Recent updates show that Pomeranz was placed on the minor league injured list on April 21 but made a successful return to the mound. On May 15, he pitched a scoreless inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Three days later, he impressed even more with a two-inning outing, striking out five of seven batters and allowing just one hit. Video footage of his stellar performance was shared by Dodgers Daily.
Based on his recent performances, it appears that Pomeranz is in good form. In total, he has pitched nine innings this year, allowing six earned runs. However, four of those runs came in his first appearance. Since then, Pomeranz has recorded a solid 2.25 earned run average, an impressive 48.3% strikeout rate, and a 3.4% walk rate over eight innings.
Pomeranz had previously established himself as one of the best relievers in baseball. After being acquired by the Milwaukee Brewers at the 2019 trade deadline, he transitioned to the bullpen and experienced great success. This prompted the San Diego Padres to sign him to a four-year contract, where he continued to excel in the following two seasons.
From the time of his trade to Milwaukee through the end of the 2021 season, Pomeranz showcased his talent, pitching 70 2/3 innings with an impressive 1.91 ERA, a 37.8% strikeout rate, a 10.2% walk rate, and a 46.2% ground ball rate.
Unfortunately, Pomeranz's 2021 campaign ended prematurely due to flexor tendon surgery, and he has been absent from the majors since then, missing out on the final two years of his contract with the Padres. Despite facing setbacks during his attempts to return to the mound, he underwent "cleanup surgery" on his elbow in May 2021.
In the current season, Pomeranz has shown progress by consistently taking to the mound. He pitched eight innings for the Angels during spring training and has since thrown nine innings for Triple-A Oklahoma over the past two months. After opting out of his previous Dodgers deal last month, there remains a possibility for a reunion between Pomeranz and the team. However, given the Dodgers' crowded bullpen, Pomeranz may explore opportunities with other clubs offering a clearer path back to the major leagues.
As Pomeranz ventures back into the open market, it will be interesting to see which team extends him an opportunity to make his long-awaited comeback to the big leagues.
