LeBron James Expected to Decline Player Option, Becoming Unrestricted Free Agent

Lakers superstar forward LeBron James is set to decline his $51.4 million player option for the 2024/25 season and become an unrestricted free agent, according to a report by Dan Woike of The Los Angeles Times. The decision must be finalized by June 29.

The news doesn't come as a surprise, as James' agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, previously referred to him as an impending free agent during a TNT Sports altcast. Although Paul later attempted to walk back the comment, it seems that James has made up his mind to explore other options.

If James opts out, it would give him the opportunity to negotiate a full no-trade clause if he decides to re-sign with the Lakers. Despite speculation about potential destinations, a return to Los Angeles is widely viewed as the most likely outcome.

However, due to the Over-38 rule, James will be limited to signing a three-year contract. Reports suggest that the 39-year-old may not be looking to play for more than a couple of additional seasons, indicating that he may prioritize a shorter-term deal.

In the 2023/24 season, his 21st in the league, James had impressive stats, averaging 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 8.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. He shot .540 from the field, .410 from three-point range, and .750 from the free-throw line in 71 regular season contests, playing an average of 35.3 minutes per game.

In the Lakers' first-round playoff loss to the Denver Nuggets, James continued to shine, averaging 27.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 8.8 assists, 2.4 steals, and 1.0 block per game. He shot .566 from the field, .385 from three-point range, and .739 from the free-throw line.

James extended his own NBA record by making his 20th consecutive All-NBA team last season. He also achieved the milestone of making his 20th straight All-Star appearance.

Beyond James' decision, Woike's story also touches on the Lakers' pursuit of a new head coach. The Lakers were reportedly interested in UConn's Dan Hurley, but he ultimately chose to stay with the Huskies, surprising the Lakers' front office. One prominent Lakers figure described their shock as being "never more shocked" in their life upon learning of the team's secret pursuit of Hurley.

As the June 29 deadline approaches, fans and analysts eagerly await LeBron James' final decision. Whether he stays with the Lakers or explores other options, his next contract will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the future of the NBA.
