In a recent lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, artist Ye, also known as Kanye West, faces accusations of spreading antisemitic conspiracy theories and engaging in concerning behavior at his troubled private Christian school, Donda Academy. The lawsuit, filed by a former employee, Trevor Phillips, alleges that Ye expressed a desire to shave students' heads, lock them in cages, and compared himself to Hitler - "minus the gas chambers."
According to the 47-page suit, Ye reportedly made these disturbing remarks during a meeting in front of school staff and children. Furthermore, the lawsuit claims that during a one-on-one meeting in a Southern California hotel room, Ye appeared to simulate masturbation while watching "The Batman" on mute. The suit also alleges that Ye "gloated" about using $2 million of the school's budget for a trip to Paris.
Representatives for Ye and attorneys for Donda Academy have not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
The lawsuit also highlights an incident during a Sunday service at Donda Academy in May, where Ye allegedly fired Phillips over a garden issue. When Phillips mentioned that his daughter attended the school and expressed gratitude for his job due to a potentially serious medical condition, Ye reportedly responded with an expletive-laden outburst disparaging Phillips and his child. The suit claims that Ye even threatened to physically assault Phillips, saying, "I was going to punch you in the face."
Phillips had been working for Ye's clothing brand since November 2022 and continued to do so until August, when Donda Academy ceased operations.
The lawsuit, led by attorney Carney Shegerian, seeks more than $35,000 in damages and includes allegations of discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, and other claims.
These latest allegations against Donda Academy add to a troubling and bizarre portrait of the school. Previous lawsuits from three former teachers and an ex-assistant principal have also alleged discrimination and wrongful termination. The accusations encompass claims of students being limited to eating only sushi for lunch, the absence of windows due to Ye's dislike of glass, and the banning of chairs, artwork, and outside books.
One of the lawsuits, involving Donda's predecessor, Yeezy Christian Academy, is scheduled to go to trial in April 2025. However, a lawyer representing Ye has previously disputed the claims, labeling descriptions of Donda as a "dystopian institution designed to satisfy Ye's idiosyncrasies" as false. The lawyer emphasized that the allegations do not reflect the positive experiences reported by current staff, students, and parents at Donda Academy.
