The roadway at milepost 12.8 on Teton Pass experienced a catastrophic failure, severing a large portion of the winding road and forcing its closure. Travel time through the area has been extended by at least an hour as officials work on plans to repair the damage.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) expressed their understanding of the vital role played by this highway, serving as a lifeline for commuters, deliveries, medical care access, and tourism. With limited alternatives and the summer season in full swing, the closure poses significant challenges for the local economy. WYDOT Director Darin Westby stated that efforts are underway to swiftly address the situation and restore highway viability.

The roadway's pavement has been replaced by a sheer chasm, with a guardrail precariously hanging over the collapsed section onto loose dirt and rocks. Notably, the road was already closed at the time of the collapse, as crews were attempting to address a major crack that had split the roadway the previous day. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and no equipment was damaged during the collapse. Stephanie Harsha, a spokesperson for District 3 of the Wyoming Department of Transportation, informed The Associated Press that an alternate route between Jackson and Victor, Idaho, adds more than 60 miles to the commute, considerably lengthening travel time. Teton Pass serves as a heavily-used commuter link between small towns in eastern Idaho and the luxurious destination of Jackson, known for its skiing and proximity to Grand Teton National Park.
