The Los Angeles Lakers' search for a new head coach continues, as they reportedly consider James Borrego as a serious candidate, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. Borrego's name has resurfaced as a potential frontrunner for the 29th head coach in Lakers franchise history.

Despite an unsuccessful pursuit of UConn head coach Dan Hurley, the Lakers have turned their attention to Borrego, who has been credited with boosting New Orleans' offensive approach during the past season while working with Willie Green's staff. Borrego's reputation in the league has put him in contention for the Lakers' coaching job, and he is reportedly being considered for the Cavaliers' position as well.

With the NBA Draft and free agency just weeks away, the Lakers are starting to feel a sense of urgency to fill the coaching vacancy. The team has been without a head coach for over a month, and entering the offseason without a coaching staff would be unprecedented and potentially detrimental to their plans.

Borrego's NBA coaching experience includes serving as the interim coach for the Orlando Magic in 2015, followed by a four-year tenure as the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets. He most recently worked as an assistant for the New Orleans Pelicans this past season.

The Lakers have already conducted an in-person interview with Borrego, indicating their serious consideration of him for the role. Among the rumored candidates, Borrego brings the most NBA coaching experience to the table, which could make a difference in the team's decision-making process.

While the Lakers have reportedly scheduled a formal interview with JJ Redick this upcoming weekend, Borrego's candidacy suggests that the team is exploring all available options in their search for a new head coach.

As the Lakers approach a critical juncture in the offseason, they must act swiftly to secure their coaching staff. The franchise's history and its pursuit of success demand a timely decision, and with Borrego now in the mix, the Lakers will need to evaluate and make a final decision amidst increasing competition for the experienced coach's services.
