In a move to provide valuable expertise and support to first-time head coach JJ Redick, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly adding two former head coaches to his coaching staff. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reveals that Nate McMillan and Scott Brooks will join the Lakers as top assistants, bringing a combined 30 years of head coaching experience to the team.
Nate McMillan, 59, most recently served as the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. With an extensive NBA career that began as a player in 1986 with the Seattle SuperSonics, McMillan transitioned to coaching following his retirement in 1998. He started as an assistant coach with the SuperSonics and eventually became the head coach in 2000. After his successful stint with the SuperSonics, McMillan took over as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers and also spent four years leading the Indiana Pacers.
Scott Brooks, on the other hand, boasts an impressive coaching resume of his own. Brooks, who currently serves as an assistant on the Blazers' staff under Chauncey Billups, has had a 12-year tenure as a head coach. He first joined the Oklahoma City Thunder as an assistant in 2007 when they were the SuperSonics, eventually taking over as the interim head coach in 2008. Brooks guided the Thunder for seven seasons, leading them to multiple playoff appearances, before moving on to coach the Washington Wizards for five seasons starting in 2016.
The addition of McMillan and Brooks to Redick's coaching staff brings an immense amount of experience and knowledge to the Lakers. With their combined years of head coaching expertise, they will play a crucial role in supporting Redick in his new leadership position.
While McMillan and Brooks bring a wealth of experience, this is just the beginning for Redick's coaching staff. The Lakers are expected to make further additions to fill out the rest of the coaching positions. It remains to be seen whether the team will continue to prioritize experienced coaches or give Redick the opportunity to bring in fresh perspectives and innovative strategies.
As the Lakers continue to shape their coaching staff, anticipation grows for the upcoming season as fans eagerly await Redick's debut as head coach alongside this strong support system of established basketball minds.
