Former Los Angeles Lakers star Mychal Thompson expressed his disappointment over his son, Klay Thompson's decision to sign with the Dallas Mavericks as a free agent. In an interview with SiriusXM NBA Radio, Mychal Thompson stated that he was not feeling particularly congratulatory about Klay's move.

Klay Thompson recently agreed to a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks, according to sources close to the matter. While the Lakers seemed like an intriguing option for Klay, the financial advantages of living in Texas, as well as the Mavericks' proximity to an NBA championship, played a significant role in his decision-making process.

Acknowledging that it was ultimately Klay's choice, Mychal Thompson, who played with the Lakers during the "Showtime" era and won two NBA championships with the team in the late 80s, admitted to hoping his son would join the Lakers. Mychal described how he, like any father, tried to influence Klay's decision by advocating for the Lakers due to their family's history and Klay's admiration for Kobe Bryant.

With four NBA championships under his belt during his 13 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson's role fluctuated throughout the last season, including a stint coming off the bench in late February. He averaged 17.9 points per game, his lowest since the 2012-2013 season.

Mychal Thompson acknowledged that he and Klay had often discussed the possibility of playing for the Lakers if he were not a Warrior. Being a fan of Kobe Bryant, Klay had expressed his desire to play for the Lakers. However, when the opportunity arose, Klay ultimately chose the Mavericks over the Lakers.

While Mychal Thompson admitted his disappointment, he accepted and supported his son's decision to join the Mavericks. He emphasized that he wanted Klay to be happy and that, as a grown man, Klay had the right to choose his own path.

The move to the Mavericks marks a new chapter in Klay Thompson's career as he looks to contribute to their quest for an NBA championship. Meanwhile, the Lakers continue their search for reinforcements to complement their roster as they aim to bounce back from a disappointing season.
