According to sources in the NBA league, four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson is expected to part ways with the Golden State Warriors in free agency. The Warriors have had minimal communication with Thompson since the start of the negotiating period for free agents, and no offer has been made by the team. Despite the Warriors expressing interest in reuniting with Thompson, his side feels that the team's intentions have been disingenuous.

Thompson, who has been a five-time All-Star guard, has made it clear that he is determined to find a new home for his 14th NBA season and beyond. Both sides believe that their 13-year partnership is coming to an end. The Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, and Dallas Mavericks are expected to be strong suitors for Thompson, along with multiple teams with salary cap space expressing interest.

The Mavericks have already created enough room to offer Thompson the full projected $12.9 million midlevel contract on the market through a salary dump involving Tim Hardaway Jr. Similarly, the Lakers have the capability to generate the same offer, depending on LeBron James' next deal and other financial arrangements.

The anticipated departure of Thompson and possibly Chris Paul's non-guaranteed $30 million deal would grant the Warriors the status of a full nontaxpayer midlevel exception team for the first time in nearly a decade. The Warriors have also expressed their willingness to participate in a sign-and-trade with Thompson to assist in maximizing his earning potential.

This news comes as a major surprise across the league, considering the deep history between Thompson and the Warriors. However, this split has been trending in this direction for the past couple of seasons. Extension talks stalled, Thompson's role shifted, the team failed to make the playoffs, and the Warriors made moves in the draft and extensions for potential replacements under Thompson.

While the Warriors have outwardly expressed a desire to retain Thompson as a core player, they have made it clear that it must be at the right price, in the right role, and at the right time. In their quest to upgrade their underperforming supporting cast around Stephen Curry, the team has been actively exploring the trade market, including a recent pursuit of free agent Paul George, which is now deemed unsuccessful.

Thompson has reciprocated the perceived lack of commitment from the only franchise he has ever known by limiting communication and preparing for an NBA future outside of the Bay Area. As both sides operate as if their 13-year partnership is coming to an end, the basketball world waits to see where Thompson's next destination will be.
