A highly-anticipated documentary shedding light on the life and downfall of actor Kevin Spacey, titled "Spacey Unmasked," has unveiled its first look trailer along with exciting distribution news. The two-part series, directed and produced by Katherine Haywood, features interviews with multiple men sharing their experiences with Spacey, completely unrelated to his recent acquittal of sexual offenses in the UK.
Commissioned by Channel 4 in 2022, "Spacey Unmasked" is set to premiere on May 6 and 7 in the UK, offering viewers an in-depth exploration of Spacey's journey from childhood and early success on Broadway to his rise to stardom. The documentary delves into the allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior that shattered his once-admired reputation.
The insightful series, which boasts never-before-seen interviews and archival footage, will investigate Spacey's conduct, providing a platform for individuals to share their encounters with the actor. The testimonies of these men, most of whom have never spoken publicly about their experiences, are expected to shed new light on Spacey's actions.
Roast Beef Productions, the Oscar-nominated production company behind acclaimed films such as "The Square," "Hell and Back Again," "Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer," and "Who is Ghislaine Maxwell," collaborated with All3 Media International to produce "Spacey Unmasked." All3Media International has successfully secured multiple pre-sales and international rights for the series.
In a significant development, Warner Bros. Discovery has inked a multi-territory deal encompassing the United States and other regions, granting exclusive rights to "Spacey Unmasked" on platforms such as ID and Max in the U.S., pay TV and HBO Max in Poland and Spain, FTA networks and discovery+ in Italy and Germany, and Max and discovery+ in Latin America. Additionally, the documentary will be available on Three Now in New Zealand, with premieres scheduled for DR Denmark, YLE Finland, NRK Norway, SVT Sweden, VRT Belgium, RTL Netherlands, and Nine Network Australia.
The documentary follows Spacey's legal journey, including his acquittal of nine charges of sexual assault, indecent assault, and causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity in July 2023 at London's Southwark Crown Court. This victory came on the heels of Spacey winning a $40 million civil lawsuit brought against him by actor Anthony Rapp, who accused Spacey of sexual battery in an incident that transpired in 1986. The case was dismissed by a New York jury.
Responding to the announcement of the "Spacey Unmasked" documentary, a representative for Spacey shared a statement from the actor. Expressing his gratitude at working with Warner Bros. after many years, Spacey remarked, "I'm honored to be starring in my first film with Warner Brothers in many years. I hope the Academy takes note of some of the great acting by the lesser-known cast."
As anticipation continues to build for the release of "Spacey Unmasked," the documentary is poised to provide critical insights into one of Hollywood's most significant scandals, offering a comprehensive account of Kevin Spacey's rise and fall in the entertainment industry.
