In a recent development surrounding Justin Timberlake's DWI-related charges, his attorney, Edward Burke Jr., has strongly denied that the superstar singer was intoxicated at the time of his arrest. Speaking to Page Six, Burke emphasized that Timberlake "was not intoxicated and should not have been arrested for DWI." The case had a hearing earlier on Friday, but Timberlake was not required to be present.
During the courtroom proceedings, Burke pointed out a crucial error in the initial charging papers. He argued that the prosecutors failed to obtain the signature of a superior officer, leading to potential grounds for the case to be dropped. Burke went on to claim that this paperwork mix-up was just one of the many mistakes made by the Sag Harbor police in this case. "The police made a number of very significant errors in this case," Burke asserted. "This is just one instance where they have faltered."
Page Six reached out to the Sag Harbor police for comment, but there has been no immediate response from the authorities. Despite the ongoing legal situation, Burke maintains that Timberlake holds respect for law enforcement and appreciates the work they do. He stated, "He cooperated with the police officers at all times and treated them with the respect they deserve."
Concluding his statement, Burke reiterated, "He was not intoxicated, and they made an error in arresting him for it. We are confident that this charge will be dismissed." Timberlake, 43, was taken into police custody on June 18 and received citations for failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to keep right due to alleged lane swerving.
According to a criminal complaint obtained previously by Page Six, Timberlake exhibited signs of impairment such as bloodshot and glassy eyes, a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, difficulty dividing attention, slow speech, and unsteadiness. He also reportedly performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests. While the singer admitted to having "one martini," he refused to take a breathalyzer test. His mugshot released after the arrest appeared to support the claims of bloodshot and glassy eyes.
An eyewitness who spotted Timberlake at the American Hotel in Long Island, New York, alleged that the singer was heavily intoxicated and even consumed another patron's unfinished alcoholic beverage. However, a bartender who was working at the hotel during Timberlake's visit supported the singer's account, stating that he only had one martini and if he drank more, it was not at their establishment.
Timberlake, who was on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour at the time of the incident, addressed the situation during his first tour stop in Chicago, telling fans that it had been a tough week. The singer is scheduled for an arraignment on August 2, which he is expected to attend virtually.
As the legal battle continues, Timberlake and his attorney remain confident that the charge will ultimately be dismissed, arguing that the arrest was based on faulty grounds and highlighting the alleged errors made by the police.
