Jury Awards $71 Million in Intellectual Property Case Involving MGA Entertainment and Musicians
ICARO Media Group
I. and his wife Tiny, awarding them $71 million in a high-profile intellectual property case against toy giant MGA Entertainment. The jury found that MGA Entertainment had violated the intellectual property rights of the couple's former group, the OMG Girlz, with their L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. dolls. These dolls, part of a popular toy line, were deemed to bear striking resemblance to the OMG Girlz, a pop and R&B group created more than a decade ago by T.I. and Tiny.
The jury's decision came after a three-week trial in Orange County, California, where members of the OMG Girlz testified that the dolls not only shared a similar name but also replicated outfits worn by the group at specific events. Fans also attested to assuming the dolls were made to resemble the musicians. This marks the third trial in four years related to the lawsuit filed by T.I. and Tiny against MGA Entertainment over the alleged infringement.
MGA Entertainment, founded by Isaac Larian, could appeal the verdict, as they have not yet provided a public statement following the ruling. The toymaker's defense argued that the dolls were not intentionally designed to mirror the OMG Girlz, claiming that the group had not been established long enough to be recognizable to consumers. However, despite the legal victory, T.I. and Tiny have recently faced unrelated allegations of sexual abuse and assault, which they have denied. The couple expressed their gratitude for the jury's decision, emphasizing the importance of protecting their intellectual property rights.
