Jose Aldo Plans to Discuss Future with UFC Following Impressive Win at UFC 301
In a thrilling co-main event at UFC 301, Jose Aldo secured a unanimous decision victory against Jonathan Martinez, marking his successful return to the octagon after nearly two years. Now, Aldo, who has become one of the hottest free agents in MMA, is set to sit down with Dana White and the UFC brass to discuss his future.
During the post-fight press conference, Aldo addressed the contractual aspect of his situation, stating, "I always have to sit with the UFC because in the contract, there is this, isn't it? The UFC can match any offer that pops up. So, calm down, I think first we have to sit with Dana, have to see... and see what is the best path we can take."
Despite his loss to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 278 in August 2022, many believe that Aldo could potentially skip the line and contend for a title shot if he chooses to re-sign with the promotion. "That's what [my manager] says - I can skip line, I can get in there because when we left, we were very well ranked," Aldo explained.
Furthermore, Aldo expressed gratitude for being part of the dedicated Rio crowd and hinted at the possibility of skipping the line for a title shot. He said, "I feel happy to be part of this card. I think we [are lucky to have ended up] here in Rio, right? Because when I started talking with the UFC [in] January, there were no plans of doing a UFC [event] in Rio, but thank God it worked. Not that I saved the card, but being able to come here and do a great show. I hope this can [help], can't it? If we can skip the line, it would be great."
Aldo also disclosed that he had received offers to fight on the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing card in July but decided to prioritize his commitment to the UFC. However, he remains open to the opportunity and will carefully evaluate his options. "Yes, it can be [boxing], like I told you. I received offers, I was sent a contract [for the Paul vs. Tyson card], but I said, 'No, I'm with UFC, so I need to fight, I need to see how I am.' Yeah, that's a big one. It's a window that opened to me."
If Aldo ultimately chooses to continue his journey in the UFC, there are several compelling matchups awaiting him, even outside of a title fight. Potential opponents include former champions Henry Cejudo and Dominick Cruz, as well as perennial contender Cory Sandhagen. Interestingly, Aldo had previously expressed interest in facing Sandhagen and had discussed the possibility with Cejudo before their respective circumstances prevented the fights from materializing.
As fans eagerly await Aldo's decision, it is clear that the former featherweight champion has multiple paths to consider. With his victory at UFC 301, Aldo has solidified his status as a sought-after free agent in the MMA world, and his upcoming discussion with Dana White and the UFC will undoubtedly shape his future in the sport.
